Let there be light!

Good evening.

Medical disclosure: I have kerataconis. It's an advanced and extreme form of astigmatism. Basically, my corneas are cone-shaped, and become increasingly more so as I age.

What that means is, I see things a bit differently. Particularly at night, or in low-light conditions. Consider the image below; I can confirm that this is pretty much what I see.

Remembering the Dead
Author: BobR    Date: 11/01/2023 13:04:30

Today is Nov 1st, the day after Halloween. Today, kids all around the country are waking up with sugar hangovers, an annual rite of passage for kids preparing them for waking up with real hangovers when they get older. Today, Halloween decorations will already look sad and tired, and ready for their long slumber in attics and basements, until next year. Today, the Christmas season begins in earnest, stubbornly kept at bay up to this point by witches and skeletons (although for a lot of retailers, that ship has already sailed).

Today is also Dias de los Meurtos, the annual Mexican Day of the Dead. For those who believe and practice, it's a day of remembrance of those loved ones who have passed. Families set up an "ofrenda", a kind of altar with photos, candles, flowers, and some sweets of those who have gone to the great beyond. It's to ensure that they have not vanished from the family's memories, and is both somber and celebratory.

Better late than never

Good Morning.

Ah sorry - busy Tuesday already. Had a flat tire that needed changing, laundry to do, and I have an interview for a winter job in a few hours.

But we can still jump right in, and as always - it's the gift that keeps on giving.

A Film
Author: TriSec    Date: 10/28/2023 00:01:22

In 2023, gun violence has devastated the United States, killing most humans there. Violent bands of survivors are carrying their guns to New England, where Lewiston, Maine will be the last city to be annihilated.

Meanwhile, citizens of New England theorize that gun violence in the rest of the country may be declining, because everybody has already shot each other, and may peter out before reaching New England. Soon after, Mainers detect an incomprehensible radio signal coming from Washington, DC, where there should be nobody alive to send it. A group is organized to sail south to investigate.

Arriving at Boston, the crew is horrified to find bodies in the streets, burning buildings, and a few survivors carrying heavy guns in the North End. The theory is incorrect; there will be no salvation from the violence. Stopping next in New York, they find the city devoid of life. One person born in New York City jumps overboard and swims ashore, so he can die at his mother’s house.

Arriving in Washington, the crew discovers that a power source is still running a radio station on automatic control. Nearby, sound levers have become tangled in some power cords and continue to broadcast a blank signal, which was received in New England.

Returning to Maine, the crew learns that Kittery has erupted into gun violence. People are being shot, stores looted, and houses burned. Some begin to arm themselves for a Last Stand, while others give up and retreat into the woods. The commander of the mission shuts himself in a garage with his car and starts the engine, to end his life by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Within a few days, the streets of Lewiston are empty. An abandoned church sits on Main Street, the doors hanging open in the cold New England winter.

The sign out front proclaims “On Earth, Peace, good will toward men.”

Just when you think it couldn't get worse, it does. The GOP elected an election denier. And it's worse than that.

Blather, Rinse, Repeat
Author: BobR    Date: 10/25/2023 12:33:52

Today begins another chapter in the long-running saga "who will not win the House Speakership today?" It has now been three weeks since Speaker McCarthy was booted from the chair for having the temerity to actually work with the Democrats and keep the government working.

Since that time, we've seen Steve Scalise get the nom from his party, only to pull out. Next came Gym Jordon, who was denied 3 times before he was removed from contention. Most recently, it was Tom Emmer, who won the next trip to the humiliation spot, bur removed himself from contention once he realized he would not get 217 votes from his own party. What's sad about that is some Democrats were considering "abstaining" on their votes for Jeffries so that the majority of votes required might actually be obtainable (the Dems have consistently been casting 212 votes for Jeffries).
