Desperate Times

Desperation makes people (or groups) do desperate things. The GOP - despite controlling the House, Senate, and Executive branch - sense that their window of opportunity is limited, due to their gross incompetence and galling self-interest. They can't help themselves in that latter aspect, but they're not even being remotely clever about it.

With tRump, they have the equivalent of that drunk rowdy friend who does all the outrageous things that make their own transgressions look tame by comparison. With the Mueller investigation already bearing fruit (and the revelation that he's subpoenaed tRump's financial records from money-laundering Deutche Bank), the writing is on the wall. By mid 2018, we could have an appointed president (ala Gerald Ford), and that's a scary unknown for the Republicans.

It's too late of course, but Republicans are attempting to reign in Mueller, by trying to taint his organically growing investigation as partisan. If they can discredit it enough, they can label it "fake news", even if tRump is led away in shackles. They have only their precursors to blame, of course, as Clinton's Whitewater investigation turned into a tawdry sex scandal with an intern.

Part of that strategy is calling out isolated incidents of potential political bias by members of the FBI or Judiciary. Facts are facts, however, regardless of the motivations for uncovering and documenting them, and cannot be ignored by the investigators once found. Was Kenneth Star unbiased? We all know the answer to that one.

Knowing that they could lose the AL seat due to Roy Moore's penchant for peccadilloes with pubescents (as well as a potential tidal wave of blowback in the 2018 elections), they are desperately trying to push out as many Dems from Congress as possible, using our own morality against us. Not every hug is a sexual predatory act, people. We all have our ways of showing affection, some more demonstrative than others.

Meanwhile in the House, nearly 60 Dems tried to get a vote on articles of impeachment for tRump. It was voted down by every Republican and most of the Dems (including Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer). I kind of agree that it's a bit premature - better to wait until Mueller's investigation is complete. Why?

1) Best to wait for an ironclad case, with crimes documented that might mean jail time
2) An impeachment hearing might put pressure on Mueller to end the investigation
3) The longer the investigation goes on, the more likely it is that more people will get dragged under.

Knowing this, you'd think the Republicans would be willing to cut tRump loose to save themselves. Cornered desperate animals, however, don't always think about the best strategy - they just react savagely.

Politico: two anonymous people have put up $5M in property as collateral for Rick Gates's bond.

If this isn't totally shady I don't know what is. Keep in mind that between with his real estate connections, Manafort with his construction ones, the Mercers, the Russians, etc. this is no stretch at all for them.

Well that interview on the show was kind of depressing.

*sigh* I would love to be able to just drop everything and take to the streets at a moments notice but adulting limits the things I can do. And just because I am not out there doesn't me I support fascism. But thanks for making me feel like I'm not doing anything and an abject failure at resisting.

I get the emails and texts nearly every day, and I work a couple blocks from the Capitol building. I join them on my lunch hour when things line up, but at 2:00 in the afternoon, I have to be at my desk.

I find myself at a crossroads today.

I want to see what Al Franken has to say later when he addresses the Senate and what happens afterwards helps me to decide whether I continue to give a shit about this country or not.

If he confesses to everything, including the anonymous complaints and decides to step down, fine. I'll be extremely disappointed but whatever.

If he says he's staying in and demands an Ethics investigation and so-called Democrats continue to call for his resignation.....then Fuck This Country. What the fuck happened to due process. Especially when the "Party of Law & Order" has no problem with an ADMITTED sexual offender as President and probably will seat a FUCKING CHILD MOLESTER as Senator. You've just placed a target on every Democratic Senator's back with a note saying "KICK ME"

You can be able to not tolerate sexual abuse and be for giving a person the right to face his accusers.

I have plenty of things in the medicine chest to take care of me........

But now the problem is there's an abundance of accusers. He's never gonna be able to shake this stigma, even with an ethics investigation. This is the same shit they've been doing to Hillary Clinton for 40 years.

But like I said yesterday, this is him taking one for the team. Now Roy Moore has no excuse to drop out, and is exposed on this issue too.

Republicans don't EVER take and road unless they can find the LOWEST road.

I don't doubt in the least that many in the "Democratic" leadership don't like the fact that Franken supports Net Neutrality and are probably looking for their latest check from Verizon and AT&T.

And they probably did it with his blessing, because he knew he couldn't overcome a rolling ball of bullshit once it gathered momentum no matter how much evidence was found during an ethics investigation might prove otherwise.

If I may chime in here.

Franken said something very interesting today. He said he would be resigning in the coming weeks, as opposed to leaving immediately.

Do you not find that curious? He is STILL in the Senate.
