Closing the Door

The final indignity of the Bush Administration occurred last night. Whether it was intentional, accidental, or pre-ordained by the whims of the calendar, Bush gave his farewell speech to the nation on Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Most people are focused on the fact that Obama will be inaugurated the day after the MLK Day holiday, but his actual birthdate was January 15th (yesterday), and that was when Bush dropped his final steaming pile upon the American populace.
The jarring juxtaposition of Bush's self-congratulatory puffery and the realities of the civil rights movement was revealed when our local PBA station broadcast a one hour retrospective narrated by my Representative in the U.S. House: John Lewis. He described the growth of the civil rights movement from his personal viewpoint as a young leader, his steady calm voice floating beneath the disturbing images and video from the past.
Amongst all the blather in Bush's speech was this particularly infuriating gem:
One would hope that we as the electorate of this country would assume that a person seeking the highest office in the land would be "willing to make the tough decisions". One would assume that the person seeking the highest office would know in advance that they would have to make tough decisions - it's part of the job description. Are we to voice our appreciation for his meeting a base requirement?
When I think of tough decisions, I think of the decisions of those young black men and women in the 60's who chose non-violent civil disobedience in an effort to gain equality. They sat at lunch counters and got in line to vote knowing they would be arrested or berated or beaten (or all of the above). They marched and protested knowing the KKK was armed and ready to put them back in "their place".
The video that most struck me was the use of dogs and firehoses against children who were protesting. It occurred to me that the use of dogs which is generally understood to be a violation of the Geneva Conventions was accepted by the (white) people of Alabama. It's also interesting that the Pentagon had to ban their use on prisoners in 2005. What are we to make of a presidential administration that uses the same banned techniques on prisoners of war that were used against black citizens in the 60's? Was this a tough decision Bush made?... or was this a decision that someone else had to make?
Two generations have passed since the heyday of the civil rights era. The healing is slow but steady, and with each subsequent generation, the poison seems to become ever more diluted. In those 40-some years, we have gone from "whites only" to a mixed-race president poised to move into the White House, fairly elected by a majority of Americans.
Despite his best efforts and his careful reading of his last best hope for anything reflectively positive, Bush will fade into the annals of history as a pathetic failure of a president, appointed to an office for which he wasn't prepared, and not even meeting the lowest of expectations. His final insult to the Americans who endured the inhumane treatment (later repeated on POWs under Bush's watch) was his speech on the birthday of one of America's greatest human rights leaders.
We can only hope that it is representative of the final dying gasp of a mindset that MLK strove to eliminate all those years ago, and which Barack Obama has shown to be fading. In a few days, a man will be sworn into office who HAS been judged by the content of his character, as another man whose character has proven to be non-existent leaves for good.

I've had my av-dork hat on since yesterday afternoon, so I feel a little need to correct some of the breathless coverage we've had. Let me preface by stating this is in no way, shape, or form meant to denigrate nor disparage the crew, passengers, or the City of New York, all of whom met the challenge of the day magnificently. (And a note with a hint of sadness, that NYC, perhaps out of all the cities in America, is the best suited among us to respond to a mass casualty event, due to first-hand knowledge.)
Two of the things that have really irritated me about the coverage are the incredulity over the floating plane and the rapidity of the evacuation. The plane floated and the people got out that fast because it was designed to happen that way.
Flotation first....an aircraft is an airtight, pressurized tube. Once it's "buttoned up" and ready to fly, if you gently placed it in the water, it would float indefinitely. That said, our pilot couldn't have done the ditching any better. The fact that the plane is still afloat and tied up at Battery Park this morning is testament to the gentleness of the landing; that tells me the pilot didn't even crack the fuselage. Alas, it's immersed in salt water, so it's likely a hull-loss accident, but I'd bet if they dried it out, it could be flown again. Even in a breakup, there's enough buoyancy in the fuel tanks and baggage pallets to keep some wreckage afloat for a while. Even a "fully-loaded" plane takes off with some airspace in the fuel tanks and other areas, not to mention the on-board oxygen system and sealed spaces in the structure that all help to keep the plane afloat.
The 90-second figure quoted by the press is actually mandatory. The FAA will not issue an airworthiness certificate if a plane can't be evacuated that quickly. Think of it...every commercial airliner in the sky today, from a lowly 19-seat Fairchild Metro to the Big-Tailed, Butt-Ugly Beast can be evacuated in 90 seconds or better. The next time you fly, take a look around. You should be no more than 7 rows from a primary exit or emergency exit. That comes from hard experience...in the earlier days of aviation there's plenty of incidents where the plane came down in one piece, but not everyone could get out before it burned or sank.
This speaks also of the training and constant drilling of the flight crew. I have a friend that's a Flight Attendant Crew Chief; he has to be re-certified on all the procedures for every aircraft he flies aboard every year.
Aviation is safe for a reason...every procedure, every piece of safety equipment, everything that the crew does or says to you has been bought and paid for already by someone else's blood.
So think about that the next time you fly....and pay attention to the safety demonstration!

I knew by age 10 I wanted to be an artist or an actress. I used to do funny news shows on my tape recorder... ok, they were not meant to be funny, I was acting like I was a serious news reporter. I had Zoo wallpaper with lions and tigers and elephants and such and I remember I would do a news broadcast about all those animals breaking loose! 
Then I would draw the pictures of it for the newspaper. I was indeed a geek.

I found out over the holidays from this guy at the mom & pop shoe store that Chippewa has started contracting their manufacturing to China. That was quite a disappointment. I did end up getting some real nice looking and very comfortable waterproof boots tho..

I find it quite funny that *ush's speech came on...they talked about it for like 15 minutes and then all the news went to SULLY!
Bush was bumped off the TV by the Airplane in the hudson. If I am gonna have to watch a plane crash... I much rather would like to talk about one that saved hundreds of lives instead of one that killed thousands.

Oh, now that they're playing the babble about 9/11 again...
