RIP Mr. Thomas
Author: Raine    Date: 01/26/2009 13:16:13

Are any of us this dedicated? On Friday, after sitting in front of the White House, under yellow tarp and board filled with flyers and posters asking for a peaceful end to American Nuclear Activities, William Thomas has left us. Many of you have seen him, or his ramshackle hut, in front of the White House. He and his wife, Ellen, were there for 27 years. He protested thru peace and non-violence.
http://dc.indymedia.org/usermedia/image/6/large/thomas.jpg

27 years is a long time. In 1988 he was taken to federal court. Seems as tho the administration at the time didn't want him in front of the White House. The White house lost, and he had been there ever since. (give or take a few months here and there). From the Prop1 Website:
Thomas' fast ended, but he remained to establish a fulltime, unpaid continuous forum in front of the White House. Thomas' message, "WANTED, WISDOM & HONESTY," has stood north of the White House day and night since 1981, except for a three-month period in 1988 when Thomas was sent to prison by U.S. Judges Flannery and Richey, who wanted to "deter others from adopting your lifestyle." He has patiently outlasted most of the police, the media, and even the eager regulation writers, who originally attempted to remove Thomas. Unlike 1981, it appears for now that the White House accepts the presence of the vigil. However, that is subject to change at any moment.
He sat in Lafayette Park (also known as Peace Park) right in direct view of the White House. If you have come to DC to protest, you will find yourself here at one point or another. Bob and I walked past it just last Monday night.

For myself, it was striking and amazing to see this for the first time in 2005. It was a little shabby looking, dated, ramshakle protest hut-- but something about this man and his wife shows determination and dedication to a cause. They would see protests and causes come and go, and yet, they were always there.

Can we say the same thing about ourselves? Mr. Thomas may never have seen an end to American nuclear activities, and we may never in our lifetime, but he was a source of inspiration to more than a generation of people both activists and tourists. He was willing to talk to anyone who came up to him. He was willing to peacefully buck the establishment. For or against what he believed in, one would always walk away from this site that he occupied for more than quarter century with something to think about.

No doubt he was willing to face those that thought he was anti-American thru the Reagan years, and the Bush years. He was there for the protests, the parades and even this last inauguration. He was a hero to some, an anti-American traitor to others. Much of it is documented in the diary kept here. However, he believed in a cause and stuck with it. Season after season, year after year.

He may not have stopped the Nukes, but he kept the flame of hope alive for a new generation of people in this country, that have dedicated at least-- at the very least-- a part of their own lives to making America a more peaceful place in whatever cause it may be.

Rest in Peace Mr. Thomas. Thank you for all you have done.

:peace: and
Raine

oh what a shame. I DO remember his display from every time I've been to Washington DC (including way back in the early 90's). Sadly, I don't remember the man himself, but I'm sure he'd be okay with that, so long as I remembered his message.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking.

We're expecting to run into some turbulence over the next 12-18 months. The weather forecast calls for blubbering neocons, continued obstructionism, and ongoing fire and brimstone for the foreseeable future.

I've been advised by Center that there is better weather ahead, but we've got to get through the initial storms first. This could take a while to clear, as we're unable to divert from the course ahead. It's a difficult flight path, but we've got a good aircraft and crew, so we'll get you through as best we can.

Thank you.

Last Tuesday heading into town, we kind of went around the subway car and everyone said where they were from. An elder couple said "Texas", and the car became noticeably darker....

Until the gentleman said "We're here to make sure George gets home safely where he can't do anymore damage."

I say we all join the group and express similar sentiments. (Be kind to your enemies; it will drive them mad!)

While I think Caroline Kennedy would have made a fine senator... she DID have a pretty bad rollout.

I think Hillibrand will be a very strong senator.

...and BTW... Joel Tyner is now running for the seat that Hillibrand is vacating. I know Joel, he's a good guy... I hope he wins the seat.

But it will be a tough one to win.

Morning all! Late again.. but this time I had a reasonable excuse!

... I had an accident with an electric razor, namely the height guide slipped from 9 to 1 while I was doing my regular trim job and VRRRROOOOOWWWWWW now there's a nice 4-inch long patch of scalp with a thin covering of white fuzz where used to stand over an inch of shiny premature grey hair.

Yeah.. and that's not all either. While I was trying to even it all out and TRY to make it look not fubar'd, the battery on the razor ran out. I tried charging it for a few hours overnight and finishing the job this morning, but it died again so now my hair has patches all over where it's a few inches long and it looks like I have some deformed mullet!

I wanted to call into work today sooo bad... but I came in anyways. The crew here at the office had a good quick laugh at my expense.

So anyways...

Oprah Responds to this news:
Oprah Winfrey said she was surprised to learn Wednesday from her best friend Gayle King that Governor Blagojevich was considering her for Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

Blagojevich confirmed on Good Morning America that he was considering Winfrey. She said she was meditating when she got the news.

"If I had been watching from the treadmill I probably would have fallen off the treadmill," Winfrey told King on King' Sirius satellite radio program. - Kara Spak

Actually, her nomination is still in committee... which means it might be either Lamar Alexander (the Asst. Minority Leader) or Tom Coburn. Both have expressed their desire to see Employee Free Choice defeated.

because Harry Reid allows it to.

All the Senate leadership has to do is to proceed with the confirmation process. That'd flush out the "anonymous" holder. And if the Republicans do filibuster, fine, let them! More likely than not we'll break it.
Seriously... Why is this hold being allowed to happen?

Okay more ill informed Reid bashing. The holds are a prerogative of any member of the Senate. It is again something that Reid could have stoped. He has no control over members of the minority. In my opinion, a filibuster weakens the reputation of majority with the public and makes the minority look better. Both sets of leadership know that. So, until there are say 65 Democrats in the Senate shite like this is going to happen all the time.

For my money though, the best version was Flight Simulator 98....that was right before the Direct-X revolution when the developers were more interested in modeling the flight parameters accurately.

Starting with Flight Simulator 2000, they got away from the roots....I mean, who wants an accurate model of the interior if it flies like a wingless turd and makes your system crash?

No, you weren't bashing Reid. One of the response on the posted thingy said

"The 'anonymous hold' only exists because Harry Reid allows it to." Which is ill-informed.

Your Harry Reid bashing always has and always will continue to be well informed.

Mondo regrets the lack of clarity of his previous post.

Blaming Reid for what the GOP does procedurally is kinda pointless. He can't control what they are doing because the Republicans are playing by the rules. Yes they are using the rules to their advantage but short of a vote on the floor of the Senate, Reid can't stop the parliamentarian maneuvers and ploys.

we still have the occasional bug - we breed'em hardy here. Anyway, I watch a lot of shows that are paranormal related where they debunk images like that - usually orbs are just dust on the lens or in the air and elongated images that zip by in a blurr are bugs.

Oh forgot to mention something about Senate majority leaders, the levers of power and the rules of the Senate. Read Robert Caro's Master of the Senate. Besides being volume three of the masterful biography of Lyndon Johnson, it is also a history of the Senate. There is also a ton of information on the rules of the Senate too. It is well worth the investment of your time. All 1200 pages of it.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled Monday that police officers have leeway to frisk a passenger in a car stopped for a traffic violation even if nothing indicates the passenger has committed a crime or is about to do so.

It was a unanimous decision.

I am looking for the other thing too...

Basically that Police can search your car if they "have a feeling."

And even scarier that it was unanimous and not just the Fascist Five. We definitely need to purge the courts so that we can get rid of the Reagan and Bushes appointees.

Having read the opinion in Johnson v AZ there is a reason it was unanimous ruling has nothing to do with Bush/Reagan appointees, but with lots of case law on traffic stops. Lets be reasonable here for a moment fellow bloggers. If any of us is pulled over by the cop for a traffic violation, what are the chances that we will be frisked? I'd say about zero.

With that said, do I think there will be a rise in the number of people needlessly frisked at a routine traffic stop? Hell yes! Especially when the stop is for DWB or DWH.

Still, any officer can now say "I was concerned for my safety" as an excuse to frisk anyone they want anytime. I think it sets a very dangerous precedent, and gives the police way too much leeway and discretion.

Hence my use of Mr Thud. Those friskees are going to be young African American and Hispanic males.

Personally I am really torn on this one. There are a lot of safety issues for cops on traffic stops, which is something that the opinion touches on more than once. There is also a lot of case law that supports the ruling. It just rubs me the wrong way that we put so much faith on the "feeling" of the officer running the stop. That is going to be abused.

DC rocks! :metal: Contrary to popular belief you aren't going to killed. The murder rate in DC has dropped like 47% in the past few years. DC is also a very livable city. Especially if decide not to live in Ward 3.
