Let Them Eat Cake
Author: BobR    Date: 11/14/2007 06:58:46

Thanksgiving is almost upon us, and Christmas is right around the corner. It's that time of year when we celebrate with excessive consumption and consumerism and all of the self-loathing that goes with it. It's with that in mind that I came across this set of headlines and stories, almost all juxtaposed one upon the other:

Ex-Citigroup boss 'to get $95m'
Buyout Firms, Hedge Funds Look to Senate, Bush to Beat Tax Rise
'Hidden Costs' Double Price Of Two Wars, Democrats Say
Middle-Class Dream Eludes African American Families
World’s poorest people being left behind, says report

from that last story:
NEW DELHI: A new global study says that despite much progress in poverty reduction worldwide, a substantial number of the world's poorest people are being left behind.

"Business as usual won't do," says the report entitled, 'The World's Most Deprived: Characteristics and Causes of Extreme Poverty and Hunger' by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). It finds that 162 million of the world's poorest people - the "ultra poor" - survive on less than 50 cents a day. If concentrated in a single nation, they would comprise the world's seventh most populous country.

We constantly hear about the disparity between the very rich and the very poor, but it's absolutely astounding. A CEO gets a "bonus" (that's on top of the obscene salary) when he does a bad job that's enough money to pay a year's "wages" to over half a million of the world's poorest people? How does one self-justify such excessive largesse?

Then we have the hedge fund firms trying to get out of paying taxes, while the bill for the costs of the wars keeps getting worse as the accounting starts catching up with reality. Why is it the people making all the money off of the labor of the rest of us don't seem to want to help pay for the country and the people that helped make them rich? You'd think they made this money in an isolated bubble.

Let me see if I can summarize: The rich make more money than they know what to do with, the poor become more destitute, the government spends more on wars, and is lobbied by the rich to keep them from paying for it. Did I get that right?

So while these gluttons crowd around the Thanksgiving banquet table sucking all the meat off the bones and dribbling bits of gravy off of their fat greasy fingers into the mouths of the poor, perhaps the one thing we can be thankful for this time of year is that we actually have one thing that they don't...

a conscience.

Dear Stephanie:

My only problem with your show is that there is not a live, in-studio camera.

But then again, considering Jim's early morning surliness, Chris's penchant for spouting right-wing-tool-time talking points at inopportune moments, and your own general boniness and gristly-ness, Perhaps it is wiser that the mook's smiling faces and your own beautiful feminine presence is best left to our imaginations.

As always, your loyal TriSec!

Say now, isn't that 'what's his name' on this 'do not pass gas' ad?

He's been dead a while now; how many of these did he record before going to meet his maker? And why are they still running them, aren't dead guys doing voiceovers usually verboten in the industry?

Blasted Fire Drill.

Morning.

Bobber! Fantastic opening.

I have FINALLY convinced my family to NOT BUY GIFTS!!!!!!!

My nephew will be getting Bosox Tix that he'll be attending with his aunt!

My God Daughter will be getting a little trinket and have money donated to her college fund.

And, the girlfriend will be getting little somethings that I know she will like; like a coffee subscription. Sacred Grounds

And, my donation of sweaters and jackets has been made.

Christmas has gotten absolutely out of control.

All of the things I love about Christmas, seem to get lost when I am fighting people at the mall for the latest "MUST HAVE" "BIG THING!" That isn't what it's about. I don't know what it's about for everyone. But, for me, Christmas isabout Peace. It's that one time of year, where I am hopeful that people can be kind to one another, that perhaps we will reflect on our place in the world, and how we can help to leave it better than we found it.

It's about the romantic feeling of that first snowfall, visiting a friend who feels lonely because they don't have a family near at Christmas, the smell of the cookies I am baking for friends, remembering my grand dad when I hear Bing Crosby whistle, and perhaps the naive hope that the feeling of Christmas will touch the powerful few who can decide to turn the world around and end Wars and Violence for all time. That is what Christmas means to little 'ole me.

Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have lost all credibility with me.

Using the "Republican Obstructionist" excuse for everything doesn't cut it. It may cut it for the Lemmings on the wRight, but not with me.

Figure it out! You are legislators for Christ's sake.

If you are getting obstructed , keeping going at that wall, or figure out a way around. Don't just shrug and say "Oh well." George Bush is at 24% approval. There have to be people in that 75% who are on the wRight. Appeal to them. Get them to call their Republican leadership.

No more excuses Nance. Get to work!

My brother is not hosting this year after all, so we're on the road. We'll see mama TriSec in Saugus in the morning, before decamping to the wingnuts-in-law for the main event.

Mrs. TriSec has some family visiting from Venezuela, this ought to be interesting. If we do devolve into a knock-down, drag-out over the dinner table, I'll be sure to post some pictures.

I'm working Friday.

Alas, I am working. But I do get holiday pay for Thursday and Friday.

I put in a vacation request for Christmas-New Year's to see if I can at least get that off but I don't know yet about that.

I used to work in tech support, so I know how the holidays go. Usually people took turns with Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years so that it was pretty even. Also, the Jewish guy worked Christmas because it was "just another day" for him.

I was in the tail end of that (early 80s). My school had a couple. The best one was the one that came in during lunch, now referred to as "the day the old ladies came to see the school blow up".

Saugus High at the time did a program for the retirement home in town, they'd pile all the people on a bus and drive them over for lunch in the cafeteria. The bus pulled up that day just at the same time as the bomb squad; it was pretty funny.

And you know what? after a half hour, we got the all-clear and went back in to class. We didn't alert the media and go home and hide under the sheets for the rest of the day.

IT doesn't mean you are not going to help clean up... *sigh* I love my family, but yes, The holidays were very stressful for me to be with them. Well, Rachel was a busy little beaver tonight.

I saw her on Right Wing Tool's show earlier with crazy Uncle Pat.

And why is Pat always so squinty? Is it because he's fighting the urge to scurry back under the furniture?

Hello all.

So Tri, I will repeat my question from last night.

1. Dochestah, town in it's own right, or the part of Boston below Southi?

2. Quarries in Quincy?

:Omar Little: Do tell!

Evening, sir.

Dorchester was once an independent city, but it was annexed by Boston Proper in the 1800s sometime. It is now a semi-autonomous borough within city limits. (see also Roslindale, Hyde Park, Roxbury, East Boston, etc.)

The Quincy quarries....source of the granite for the Bunker Hill Monument, Quincy Market, the Custom House, and many other historic buildings in and around this city.

Abandoned for most of the 20th century, after several high-profile drownings in the early 80s, the quarries were filled in with Big Dig dirt and are now a lovely park and soccer complex high in the Blue Hills with a magnificent view north into Boston.

Most of us can only listen to Momma on the computer. Mala is the only one who gets a station and her station doesn't air it until nightime either.

Thank you kind sir. Most of the action in Gone Baby, Gone takes place in Dorchestah. A significant scene in the book happens at the quarries. :bow2:

Right now with the early sunset, I can get Momma on 1500 from DC. You might be able to pick it up in the ATL as well since it is one of those nightime flame-throwers.

Raine, forgot to mention, one o' the brew pubs is not too far from Chez Mondo. River City Brew Pub is expensive and caters to the power tie crowd downtown.
