Some thoughts

Well, good morning.

Yesterday was my presumed last day of driving an MBTA shuttle bus. I have given my reasons previously, but nonetheless all the pressure is off. Just in time, too, with a significant MBTA shutdown through most of the month of September. As a part-time driver now, I can be rather picky about what I want to do now. Unfortunately, as a part-time driver, that also means that most of my assignments will be MBTA, but I might be finding "other things to do" rather than driving that hellscape.

But enough about me - let's talk about the rich today. I genenally fall under the "Eat the Rich" camp most days, so when some kind of calamity befalls one or more of them, I generally have a pleased nod to the greater forces at work.

Alas - last week's incident has actually given me a little pause. I'm sure you heard about the superyacht Bayesian going down last week? This does feel a little different that the Titanic Hubris expedition a while back. I mean really, what are the chances that a ship is going to be hit by a waterspout in a protected anchorage?

In any case - all the bodies have been recovered from the wreckage, and there were a handful of survivors. Like the Titanic, a teenaged child was one of the casualties. And while OceanGate should be investigated and prosecuted, I do find it curious that an investigation has been launched into the sinking of the Bayesian.

A manslaughter investigation has been launched into the deaths of seven people in the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily, an Italian prosecutor said.

British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were among the seven people who died after the Bayesian superyacht sank near Porticello at about 5am local time on Monday.

Ambrogio Cartosio, public prosecutor of nearby town Termini Imerese, said in a press conference at the town’s court on Saturday that his office has opened an initial investigation into manslaughter.

“The Termini Imerese prosecution has opened a case hypothesising the crime of shipwreck and of manslaughter but we are only at the initial stage of the inquiry so far,” he said.

He added: “I have to emphasise that the development of the inquiry could actually be of any sort imaginable.”

The main question investigators are focusing on is how a sailing vessel deemed “unsinkable” by its manufacturer, Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

I presume that somebody wants to check out the "unsinkable" claim from the manufacturer, but I would think that the British would know better than anyone else what folly that claim actually is.

In the end - the sea takes what it wants, and she doesn't care who you are or how much money you have.

But then there are things that care how much money you have, and are always seeking new ways to get as much of it as possible, and that would be corporate America. Many corporations have changed policies, politics, and more, to appeal to what they perceive to be their major market segment. In turn, sometimes others are alienated or left behind by the new direction companies go in.

Famously, of course, our differently-winged friends. There is a tactic that we can all use to show our displeasure with a company's policies. Let us consider for a moment, Charles Boycott.

In the 1870s, Irish farmers faced an agricultural crisis that threatened to result in a repeat of the terrible famine and mass evictions of the 1840s. Anticipating financial ruin, they formed a Land League to campaign against the rent increases and evictions landlords were imposing as a result of the crisis. When retired British army captain Charles Boycott, acting as an agent for an absentee landlord, tried to evict tenant farmers for refusing to pay their rent, he was ostracized by the League and community. His laborers and servants quit, and the crops in his care began to rot. Boycott’s fate was soon well known, and his name became a byword for that particular protest strategy, both as a verb and as a noun.

Sometimes it is a useful tactic when done right. While they aren't missing my money, I have never set foot in a Chick-fil-a or Hobby Lobby, and I have no future plans to do so. On the other hand, Uncle Walt and his minions in Orlando always seem to get plenty of my money.

So, once again, a highly amusing MAGAt "boycott" gets it completely wrong.

Harley-Davidson was 'one of the backbone companies of America,' Lanckiewicz says in his first video.

'But the unthinkable has happened — they've gotten a woke CEO who's trying to do everything he can to change this company, not for the better, but for their own woke agenda.'

The way Lanckiewicz tells it, DEI amounts to 'communism' and is linked to satanic forces that are hell-bent on destroying America.

'They're going to put somebody in a position because of the race, gender, not because who's the most qualified for the job. That's crazy,' he says.

Then, Lanckiewicz and his friends unload on two Harleys — an Electra Glide and a Sportster — with an increasingly ferocious arsenal of weapons.

The automotive carnage starts with M60 machine guns before moving on to an M134 mini-gun, and then two powerful 50 BMG rifles.

In the second video, the men cause more damage with a 6lb cannonball fired from a 'historic' piece of artillery.

For a finale, the men add Bud Light cans and a Target bag to the bikes — emblematic of two other major firms that were boycotted last year over alleged wokery.

They're dressed in 'patriotic' fatigues from the 1775-1783 war for independence from Britain.

'Mr woke CEO of Harley-Davidson, your anti-American wave will no longer be tolerated, and I've got 6lbs of American patriotism going at your woke pile of c**p,' says Lanckiewicz.

The videos have been watched hundreds of thousands of times and won plaudits from viewers, including Robby Starbuck, the conservative influencer who started the crusade against DEI at Harley-Davidson and across corporate America.

A quick check over at the Harley website yields these figures:

The Sportster new is $17,000. While they no longer make the Electra Glide, the last model year of 2023 is listed for $27,000.

That's some pretty expensive "boycott", especially since Harley already had his money.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I hope to hear from a few places that I interviewed today. Also, I am working on a back up plan as subbing is slow.
