Under The Radar
Author: BobR    Date: 07/01/2009 12:01:06

The last few days have been rather monolithic with regards to the news. First it was Farrah Fawcett, then Michael Jackson, then Harlequin Romance Novel cover model Governor Sanford, and then yesterday Senator Franken (c'mon Bill-O - you can say it!). With all of this hubbub going on, you have to assume some other news items got overlooked. As a public service, we here at FourFreedoms News are happy to pass along some of these Under the Radar stories.

Starting internationally, former House Rep Cynthia McKinney was "kidnapped" by Israel as she tried to participate in a humanitarian aid effort to Palestine:
A group of 21 peace activists sailing to Palestine were intercepted and arrested by Israeli authorities on Tuesday as they attempted to bring food and medical supplies to the war-torn city of Gaza. Israel said it plans to deport most of the people involved, including former U.S. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Mairead Maguire, a Nobel laureate.

The group insists they were not in Israeli waters. In a media advisory, the arrests were characterized as kidnapping.

"This is an outrageous violation of international law against us," said McKinney in a press release issued by the Free Gaza Movement. "Our boat was not in Israeli waters, and we were on a human rights mission to the Gaza Strip. President Obama just told Israel to let in humanitarian and reconstruction supplies, and that’s exactly what we tried to do."

They will likely all be released, but this should raise a stink. However, since it doesn't involve McKinney "assaulting" a security guard, you won't hear anything.

In other disturbing news Arizona becomes the first state to criminalize illegal aliens:
Arizona has moved a step closer to becoming the only state to criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants through an expansion of its trespassing law.

A 16-11 vote by the Arizona Senate early Wednesday would criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants in the state. The measure must still be approved in the House and signed by Gov. Jan Brewer.

As a reminder, the current federal law regarding people entering the country illegally is civil, not criminal. Despite some people referring to illegal aliens as "criminals", they technically should not be referred to as such because they have not broken criminal law - until now... in Arizona.

For further infuriation, Citibank is raising rates on millions of credit cards:
Citigroup Inc has increased interest rates on up to 15 million U.S. credit card accounts just months before curbs on such rises come into effect, the Financial Times reported citing people close to the situation.

Citigroup had upped rates on 13 million to 15 million credit cards it co-brands with retailers such as Sears, the paper said.

In a statement, Citigroup said "We have adjusted pricing and card terms for some customers as part of our regular account reviews. This is an ongoing process to ensure we offer terms, interest rates, credit lines and products based on individual needs and risk profiles."
(bold-face mine)

I don't remember if they got any TARP funds, but if they did, this should be forbidden. This is usury of the worst sort.

Finally, in slightly better news, Secretary of Defense Gates is looking to enforce DADT a little less exuberantly:
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday he wants to make the law prohibiting gays from serving openly in the armed forces "more humane" until Congress eventually repeals it. He said he has lawyers studying ways the law might be selectively enforced.

"One of the things we're looking at is, is there flexibility in how we apply this law?" Gates said.

The defense chief, a holdover from the Republican administration of former President George W. Bush, told reporters traveling with him in Europe that the Clinton-era ban was written without much wiggle room. The Pentagon general counsel is looking at potential avenues around full enforcement as a stopgap, Gates said.

For example, Gates said, the military might not have to expel someone whose sexual orientation was revealed by a third party out of vindictiveness or suspect motives. That would include, Gates said, someone who was "jilted" by the gay service member.

Yay?

So now that we've fed your head, feed your stomach with a and have some and enjoy the rest of your day!...

Howdy folks!

Looking out at the fog and gloom, and wondering if our US NAVY BLUE ANGELS are going to be able to fly over Boston today....

(It's been fairly interesting following the story at Boston.com. They allow unmoderated comments on the stories, and a group I call "The haters" has taken over the thread. Curious that they don't have any problems over taxpayer money being spent on the USS Constitution, Lexington Green, The Freedom Trail, Bunker Hill, etc.)

And happy Canada Day!

How do you hate the Blue Angels? :scratchhead:

Hey Scoop - your a gamer, right? Do you know of a game that merges a tomb raider with a FF?

Comment by TriSec on 07/01/2009 13:03:54
Folks are complaining about the wasted taxpayer dollars and the obvious, over-the-top jingoism and recruiting opportunity the Blue Angels represent.

Of course, I blogged about this myself Saturday. But I also decided that I like airplanes too much. Hey, I realize that most of my tax dollar goes to the military....even I like to see what I'm paying for every now and again.

Comment by wickedpam on 07/01/2009 13:11:13
I understand how it could be a waste of tax dollars - but its the Blue Angels. Its always been a treat to see them no matter what. They are as part of Americana now as the images of the fife and drum, red, white & blue, apple pie, minute men.

The hell of it is, it's actually not a waste of taxpayer money. The Blue Angels are an active-duty squadron, they're included in the military's annual budget to begin with. The difference is, instead of overseas, they are deployed to the United States, and the mission is public relations, outreach, and yes....recruiting.

They can repaint those jets gray, bomb up, and be overseas in 24 hours if they had to.

(and it's the same for the Thunderbirds, too.)

Bobber, thank you for posting actual news.

In regards to banks raising rates...

Bank Skank of America raised my rate to 14.99% ( it was previously 5.99%. )

And First National of Omaha will be raising me next month to 17.99%!

I have a 750 credit score and ALWAYS pay well over my minimum ON TIME.

F*ckers.

Comment by Scoopster on 07/01/2009 13:51:45

Oh...I don't use my credit cards....I am paying down old balances ; I put myself on a 3 year pay off plan. It's not through a credit counselor. I just do it myself, hence to over minimum payment every month.

I haven't used my cards in over 18 months.

Exactly.

I learned the credit card lesson a bit late in life and now am atoning.

However, it is not a consumer's fault when they open a credit card under one agreement that they feel is reasonable ( ie; 5.99% ) and it then gets jacked up without warning. There is fault on both ends, but they are certainly predatory and getting worse of late.

And, don't get me started on the FICO system. It is designed to make people fail. I work hard to keep my credit score where it is, but it's all a game with unfair rules.

The only line of credit I would ever have again would be through my Credit Union; I am currently in the process of moving all my checking and savings to them. Screw B of A.

Starling & Velveeta: If you set up a payment plan with CCCS, they will negotiate with the CC companies to reduce the rates, and you can setup a plan that works for your budget. I've been on one for a year and a half, and still have a couple years left. My interest rates are all in the 8-10% area.

I would also recommend Fire Emblem, if you've got the Wii, you can play the Game Cube one. Which I would recommend over the Wii one. (i would recommend over them the ones for the Gameboy)

Well, I like those kind of games, I'm weird, I know.

Indigo Prophecy is one of those odd ball games I like.

Actually, games based of Spider-Man 1 and 2 are actually good.

Silly Bobber... who said it's supposed to make sense?

But, trust me, if someone calls on your behalf and negotiates a lower interest rate, it will affect your score. Sad but true.

I think if people are okay with that and feel that's the only option they should do it.

I just choose not to.

Beyond Good and Evil hands down. One of the best games I've ever played, and has a female lead.

Also Metroid, but that's an obvious choice. Female Leads though...

Can't think of ones that are outstanding.

Indigo prophecy goes through about four characters one is female.

But now that I think about it...Not many RPGs have female leads. And I understand, I do.

If you've got a good P.C. I'd get Knight of the Old Republic, by Bioware. Ya make the character from scratch, so it can be Female. But it's Star Wars, so...yeah, but It's good.

If you're into it, Shin Megami Tensei series is quite good, but very...VERY weird. And Very Japanese. If anyone's here played Persona 3 knows what I mean.

And I understand, I do.

love Xenosaga! it does get a little hard to play especally if you take a break from it for a while

I know x-2 is a little light - but Rikku still rocks

Its is a sad commentary that there aren't more female main characters - there are a lot of girls and women who like to play something other then childish ones or war games.

If you can get into the flow of playing as an entirely female cast, including all the girly stuff that the game expects you to do which is more difficult for guys, X-2 is actually pretty enjoyable.

Female leads? Samus Aran from the Metroid series. I need to get a Wii so I can play Metroid Prime..

The worst part is that bill doesn't go into effect for several months and it doesn't put caps on the rates credit cards charge. That's why the bill was far from perfect since Bernie Sanders wanted both of those added to the bill.

Now this is a righteous Rant!
Sixty effing votes.

You've got the threshold to pass anything you want now. Anything. You want a bill declaring you have the biggest balls of them all? You got it. You want a bill taking every dollar everybody ever made and putting it in a big pile and lighting it on fire to warm the faces of the indigent and helpless? You got that, too. All you have to do is get your 60 Democrats in line and you've got it all.

What, that's too hard? You want MORE, you greedy f*cker? You need 65 votes? You need 100? You need more than both houses of congress and the White House? You need more than that? TOUGH. Nobody said we could get to 60 and we got there for you, so there you are, on a silver platter, is everything you need. If you can't work with that, well then, my God, Harry, I don't know what to tell you. Possibly you need some therapy. I can recommend an excellent woman who will sit you down and tell you, like the sugar-high five-year-old you are, that the world is not fair and we do not get everything we want so on balance let's work with what we've got. What's that? You don't want to appear partisan? You want to grant deference to Republicans? You want to make sure the American people don't perceive you as MEAN?

Let me clue you in to something, Harry. The American people like it when you're mean. They get off on it. They think it's funny when the weaker political kid gets kicked. It makes them feel all tingly in the gonads. If this wasn't true, Bill O'Reilly wouldn't have a job, so stop thinking the American people want warm and fuzzy decency. We don't. We want Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith to go to Washington, punch that bully congressman in his face and fuck the prom queen on the National Mall. We want the team that wins at kickball and then gloats all the way to the end of recess, and if you think it's any more complicated than that, my God, you're just not having enough fun in show business.

I guess it's why I never felt compelled to passionately get behind the Gay Marriage debate. I do see it as a Civil Rights issue, but for me personally, the idea of marriage no longer seems appealing.

There is that whole turn the other cheek thing. But, it does seem to contradict Christ's teaching to be packing heat to church.

If you've got a few minutes to kill:

For Many, Marriage Is Sexless, Boring and Oppressive: Time to Rethink the Institution?

and

Let's Call the Whole Thing off!

I guess it's why I never felt compelled to passionately get behind the Gay Marriage debate. I do see it as a Civil Rights issue, but for me personally, the idea of marriage no longer seems appealing.
Believe it or not, I agree.

I love Bobber, but it is not our marriage that makes this work. Having fallen in love many times, I believe that marriage is not the be all and end all to love. He makes it work. I make it work -- and We make it work. (this work, btw is not a chore --therefore it is not work... it is a passion. I will comment on this a little later)

That said, people, should they choose, should be able to marry and have the same rights as Hetero couples. I have long held the assertion that we should all have the same rights available to everyone. Right now, the Gay marriage debate is what it is. A few years ago it was civil unions, it has since morphed into marriage. IT isn't the title, it is the end result that matters to me.

I have waffled between civil unions and marriage. As a straight chick, it is not for me to define the movement. Personally I don't care WHAT the title is. I would prefer that government get out of the business of religious marriage. In the end, relationships wax & wane. Good relationships may take work, but the *work* isn't supposed to be a chore. I fully believe that nothing you are passionate about is a chore.

As a married woman -- for the second time in my life -- I am still mixed about it. I know how fragile marriage can be, but -- so is every relationship, intimate or not. There are people who think it is strange that I don't have a ring. I don't need a ring. Being married is so public but in the end, it is the relationship -- the thing that no one sees, that really matters.

Marriage is the cherry on top of a sundae--- It makes it really awesome, but if the lack of a cherry makes the sundae suck to you, then you have a lot more than you think to be worried about.

(pretty heavy fluff there )

:star: I am re-reading this article, in the Atlantic. I found it engrossing, but I have to say...

To what end do you think being a parent played? Particularly this statement:
Given my staggering working mother’s to-do list, I cannot take on yet another arduous home- and self-improvement project, that of rekindling our romance. Sobered by this failure as a mother—which is to say, my failure as a wife—I’ve since begun a journey of reading, thinking, and listening to what’s going on in other 21st-century American families. And along the way, I’ve begun to wonder, what with all the abject and swallowed misery: Why do we still insist on marriage? Sure, it made sense to agrarian families before 1900, when to farm the land, one needed two spouses, grandparents, and a raft of children. But now that we have white-collar work and washing machines, and our life expectancy has shot from 47 to 77, isn’t the idea of lifelong marriage obsolete?

Is she conflating Marriage and Parenthood?

And I would further ask -- do people get those 2 things confused? Has she given up on marriage for the betterment of her children?

Just curious. It was a great article, really great.

Comment by TriSec on 07/01/2009 18:50:36
I think it's the Star Trek universe that has the concept of "contract marriage". You and your partner can set a term..a year, 5, 10, whatever, and go for it. When the contract is up, you can decide to renew, or not, and move on with your lives.

I had a lunch interview today. A guy I used to work with set it up with the Tech Mgr for the company they work for. Interestingly, it's the same type of work I've done at 3 of my previous employers.

The short and sweet of it is that they'd probably have hired me today if they had a position available, but they don't. It seems like a great company and a great job, and I would love to work there.

So - they just need a little more business, and I'll probably get the call. Might be a week; might be a month. I hope it's soon.

does that make sense?

Heh.. I've been writing off my college loan & trust account interest for at least the past 10 years.

back when I was a kid I remember it was big news that people could no longer take the credit card interest off there taxes - so at one time we could do this

Ok -- Rush has finally gone over the top -- even for him.

“I have an observation about this Jackson thing,” Limbaugh began on his radio show Wednesday. “Jackson’s success paralleled the rebound of the United States under [Reagan]. Jackson’s biggest successes took place the in 80s … He flourished under Reagan, he languished under Clinton [and] Bush, and he died under Obama.”

Then he added, cryptically: “Let’s hope this parallel does not continue.”

Arguing, presumably, with his producer off-screen, Limbaugh asked: “What about what I said is not true?”

And then, as if turning Jackson’s death into a partisan issue wasn’t enough, Limbaugh went after the race angle.

“Michael Jackson died during the era of the first black president,” he said. “How about if I say it that way”
