The Heat is On

As some of you may know, our AC has not been working. It started with water collection from the expansion coils triggering a float switch to a cracked collection plan. We've been without AC for a couple weeks now. We ended up buying a couple window units to get us through this heat wave which shows no signs of abating any time soon.
It's not just us, though. All across the country, people are dealing with record temps:
Of course, this heat was predicted way back when Al Gore was running for president. Everyone laughed at him. Climate scientists have predicted extreme temps and worsening weather. We just had a hurricane in July.
A lot of this could have been prevented, or at least minimized had we actually taken action when we had a chance. It became political because republicans and oil company execs wanted it to be political. By making it political, they could frame it as "big government trying to tell you how to live" (never mind their stances on abortion).
One of those leading the charge, James Inhofe (R-OK) died yesterday. Sadly, it was not heat-related:
Like most dumb (or deliberately obtuse) republicans, he confused weather with climate. He had absolutely no scientific training with regard to climate science, and yet felt like he knew more than the scientists. That hubris is (and will be) our eventual undoing.

In New York City's Central Park, the heat index made it feel like 96 degrees, the National Weather Service said. At Newark Liberty International Airport in nearby New Jersey, the number was 103.
In the metro New York City and Lower Hudson Valley area, an air quality health advisory was also in effect until 11 p.m.
At least seven deaths in the Western U.S. are suspected of having been caused by the extreme heat, officials said. Five people have died in Oregon since Friday, and those deaths are being investigated as possibly being heat-related, the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
In Death Valley, California, a motorcyclist died of suspected heat exposure and another was hospitalized for severe heat illness Saturday. Another man, Kevin Gerhardt, of Sacramento, died Sunday because of the heat, NBC affiliate KCRA of Sacramento reported.
In Skagit County, Washington, the surface of the road buckled because of the searing temperatures. Crews over the weekend fixed the "heat heave," the state Transportation Department said.

Former Sen. Jim Inhofe, a conservative known for his strong support of defense spending and his denial that human activity is responsible for the bulk of climate change, has died. He was 89.
Inhofe, a powerful fixture in Oklahoma politics for over six decades, died Tuesday morning after suffering a stroke during the July Fourth holiday, his family said in a statement.
Inhofe, a Republican who underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery in 2013 before being elected to a fourth term, was elected to a fifth Senate term in 2020, before stepping down in early 2023.
Inhofe frequently criticized the mainstream science that human activity contributed to changes in the Earth’s climate, once calling it “the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.”
In February 2015, with temperatures in the nation’s capital below freezing, Inhofe brought a snowball on to the Senate floor. He tossed it before claiming that environmentalists focus attention on global warming as it kept getting cold.
