This years presidential election got thrown into a bizarre twist on Sunday, when President Biden decided to rescind his reelection campaign, and toss it off to Veep Kamala Harris. All the sturm and drang leading up to it was aggravating and frustrating, because he's been absolutely killing it in the White House, and I was ready for more.
I was also concerned about what that would mean in terms of down-ticket support, etc. Eight years ago, one of the most qualified persons ever to run for president won the popular vote, but lost because of the antiquated electoral college. I was concerned that Harris would suffer the same fate.
I needn't have worried. The support for her candidacy is literally exploding. She got the most donations in the first 24 hrs of any presidential candidate
EVER (disclaimer: I donated $25.00). Those who were complaining that our choices were down to two old white guys now have a reason to get excited again, and boy are they ever. As the Blog Diva noted in her
Monday blog, her sister fits squarely into that demographic. The choice is now between an old fascist with a dismal record, horrible personality, and a tendency to wander off into LaLaLand (figuratively) when speaking, and a young moderately progressive woman who used to prosecute criminals like tRumpy, and has been learning the ropes (and meeting world leaders) by the side of President Biden.
Naturally, this throws tRumpy and his campaign into panic mode. They had everything planned to constantly hammer on President Biden's age and
perceived cognitive loss. Now tRumpy is the dottering old white guy, and the Dems have a younger dynamic mixed-race woman with plenty of public service experience. tRumpy is actually demanding that the Dems reimburse his campaign because of money they've already spent on ads and materials.

It also completely let the air out of the tires of any boost he may have gotten after the convention (although any sane person watching that hot mess likely wouldn't be voting for him anyway).
Yes, there are things to be concerned about, and I certainly hope she's getting the campaign help she needs. She needs to ensure she's on the ballot in all 50 states in November. She (or the Dem party) needs to pick the right running mate. She's going to be facing withering scrutiny of everything she's ever done in her life, and there will be people who will claim "I can't vote for her because of XYZ...", as if that means they have to vote for tRumpy.
I will miss Uncle Joe, but he's earned his retirement. I am cautiously hopeful about the road ahead, but more hopeful than cautious. Damn the torpedos - full speed ahead.
