The First Casualty
Author: BobR    Date: 09/25/2024 13:02:45

There is an old saying that goes "the first casualty of war is the truth". It seems that would also be the case for political campaigns, especially when it comes to MAGA republicans.

We're already familiar with the "their eating the dogs!" nonsense, pushed by JD Couch and repeated by tRumpy at the debate. JD admitted that he had no facts to back up his claims, but still saw no problem with passing along the nonsense. Yesterday, he doubled-down:
JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, has suggested that the people of Springfield, Ohio, have been prevented from speaking “their truth” after a rumor about the town’s Haitian immigrants was repeatedly and thoroughly debunked.

Haitian immigrants in the town have been baselessly accused of stealing domestic pets, including dogs and cats, and eating them.

Vance has continued to push the claim even after town officials issued denials...

So... it's okay to promulgate made-up stories, because it helps draw attention to the "plight" of the people in Springfield? Wut?

FWIW, John Oliver pointed out on his HBO show that the Haitians were asked to come to Springfield because of an available worker shortage, and the town has benefitted from their presence.

“Did you ever think about listening to people speak their truth instead of listening to some bureaucrat and assuming that everything they tell you is true?” he asked.
... said the guy who is running to be a bureaucrat...

I'm sure you've all seen the story about how Vance was claiming egg prices were $4.00/doz, while standing in front of an egg case with clearly visible prices of $2.99. On top of that, he said his 2 kids eat 14 eggs every day. There is absolutely no way his pre-teen kids are eating 7 eggs each, every day. Also - isn't feeding the kids breakfast the mother's job? (according to him). How would he even know?

It seems that Vance is taking cues from his running mate, with regard to the unimportance of telling the truth. However, Vance just isn't the used car salesman that tRumpy is, so he's just really bad at selling bullshit.

For a master-class on marketing shit, we turn to the main "man" himself. He may (or may not) mention certain things during his rallies (depending on where his damaged brain wanders in mid sentence), but he tweets - and retweets - some questionable stuff. That would include a story that the Kamala Harris campaign is paying people to protest tRump's rallies:
Donald Trump on Monday shared a baseless claim by a MAGA OnlyFans model who alleged her nail salon stylist’s cousin is being paid $700 a week by Kamala Harris’ campaign to participate in protests.

“I just left my nail salon and my nail tech said their one cousin is in South Philly and she is getting paid $700 a week to go to wherever Kamala’s campaign tells them to go to,” said Samantha Gangewere, who goes by “thatboostedchick” on social media, in a TikTok video Trump posted to his Truth Social page. “She’s not even a citizen, she can’t vote, but she wants that extra money.”

So that's what - 3 degrees of separation from the original claiment? Totally legit, I am sure

In some ways, I suppose, these campaigns are like a type of war... and the truth isn't just a casualty - it's been strung up from a lampost for everyone to see.
