Rep. John Kline sponsors legislation to reaffirm ‘In God We Trust’ [snip] Republican Rep. John Kline is a sponsor of a resolution in the U.S. House that would reaffirm “In God We Trust” as the national motto and encourages the posting of the motto on government buildings and in public schools.
“[House Majority Leader Eric] Cantor told reporters Tuesday that if given the opportunity, he will explain to the president that businesses do not have a “responsibility” to the nation or to the government in the way Obama explained in his speech to the Chamber of Commerce earlier this week.
...
“That’s not how it works,” Cantor said. “Because Washington says so — that business or anyone should respond as far as spending money — it’s just anathema to the way I think America works…Washington doesn’t just wave a magic wand and necessarily, business creates jobs.”
Republicans Call For Defunding Half-Finished Stimulus Projects They Once Supported And Took Credit For
As the OMB director Jerry Zients noted, most of the unspent stimulus money the Republicans have targeted is already obligated to specific projects. By cutting off stimulus funds to current projects, Republicans could leave projects half-finished and force mass layoffs at stimulus-funded sites. This wasteful idea is even more cynical given the fact that Republicans have taken credit for major stimulus projects that are still ongoing and could be affected by their new anti-stimulus budget: (see more at link)

Brrrrrrrrrr. Obama is getting COLD.
With that in mind, the proposed cuts offered the appearance of a president abandoning principle in hopes of winning fiscal conservative plaudits. A source familiar with the budget process, however, offered several clarifications to Wednesday's report. The cut, the source said, would be $2.5 billion in LIHEAP funding, not $3 billion. The proposed appropriation level will be $2.57 billion, which mirrors the Fiscal Year 2008 appropriation, not $2.8 billion.
And while it had been reported that the Recovery Act helped move LIHEAP funding from that FY08 level to more than $8 billion, the source said that was not the case. There was no LIHEAP funding in the stimulus, rather, there were funds for weatherization programs
Finally, the source said that "energy prices are now well below their levels in Spring 2008 when Congress decided to increase LIHEAP funding to $5.1 billion."
Critics say that the program is poorly administered and that, contrary to intentions, it’s become a subsidy for energy companies, most of whom are prohibited by law from turning off services to delinquent bill-payers during weather emergencies. About 10 percent of LIHEAP funds are transferred to “weatherization†programs, according to a government study.
Republicans on Wednesday unveiled a partial list of items they’d cut from the resolution that funds the current budget year. Obama won’t cut nearly as much.
Beyond the LIHEAP cut, many of Obama's proposed cuts will come from federal programs where new incentives and increased competition could provide the service more cheaply, or where a lack of oversight has created waste and inefficiency, the officials said.
Of course, there is a possibility that this could become Obama's "firemen first" problem. The phrase comes from Washington editor and author Charles Peters, who has noted that when cities face budget cuts, those resisting the cuts almost always point immediately to the threat of firemen losing their jobs. The idea is to create so much fear that the cuts never go through.
When President Reagan proposed his budget in 1981 with cuts to the Interior Department, there were widespread leaks that the Washington Monument might have to close. (The celebrated obelisk on the National Mall is run by the National Park Service, a part of the Interior Department.) Reagan got some of his cuts and the monument was never shuttered.
By offering a particuarly dramatic cut, the administration may find its allies more combative and dug in on other issues, too. If they're coming for grandma's heating oil, then what are they going to do about Social Security? Obama and the Republicans know they have to reduce a national debt that's close to 100 percent of the gross domestic product. How they get there is going to be the fascinating story of 2011, and the LIHEAP card, first unearthed by National Journal, couldn't be a more interesting way to start.
Military and ruling party officials say President Hosni Mubarak will speak to the nation soon and meet the demands of protesters. Protesters are insisting he step down immediately.
Military officials say the armed forces' supreme council has been meeting all day long and will issue a communique shortly that they say will meet the protesters' demands.
The ruling party chief, Hossan Badrawy, tells The Associated Press he expects Mubarak to address the nation and make a announcement that will satisfy their demands.
