Can we talk?

Here is the best-known origin of the term mansplaining.

That was April 2008 and it struck a chord. It still seems to get reposted more than just about anything I’ve written at TomDispatch.com, and prompted some very funny letters to this site. None was more astonishing than the one from the Indianapolis man who wrote in to tell me that he had “never personally or professionally shortchanged a woman” and went on to berate me for not hanging out with “more regular guys or at least do a little homework first,” gave me some advice about how to run my life, and then commented on my “feelings of inferiority.” He thought that being patronized was an experience a woman chooses to, or could choose not to have–and so the fault was all mine. Life is short; I didn’t write back.

I post this because yesterday, a male friend of the Stephanie Miller show took much umbrage at being called out for suggesting that Candidate, former first Lady, Former Senator and Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton try dressing, looking and acting differently. Here is the defense he posted on his Facebook Page:
Well that was interesting. A heated debate on Stephanie Miller with Sue from Rockville because I made the suggestion that Hilary needs to work on her branding and perhaps look at different wardrobe choices- look like a Cross Fitter and not so Equinox.Unfortunately, this election cycle has little to do with substance. Sue started her argument with, "Carlos, let me do a little "Mansplaining". Well, that patronizing and condescending tone did not rest two seconds with me. My yelling over her was not the most effective way of communicating (however I do find the Brits have more of a stomach for it than we do # Speakers Corner/Hyde Park OR Parliament) but neither is the assumption that just because I may not like Hilary as our Democratic choice as much as Bernie-or saying she needs to work on her brand- does not equate to misogyny. Yeah, Elizabeth Warren! Deirdre was upset but in the end Helen had my back.
He actually suggested that HRC dress more like Elizabeth Warren and showed a picture of the Senator. From there he declared that maybe more of a neckline and something about collars and it went on and on. When he was asked to apologize it basically was stated that he was a guy and he treated Sue like a man and that is why he won't apologize to her.

Nope, no patriarchy there. (do I need to add a sarcasm thing here?) We all have to be like men if a man feels like he was treated badly.

He didn't want to hear how he was making people uncomfortable. It wasn't funny.

He declared on the air to another woman 'Sorry, It's just the way it is'.

That a problem. It's a problem because only people who want it that way will declare it so, and sadly, many times it is a man deciding whether sexism exists because that's the way it is.

The following video is funny, sad and true, and it doesn't have to be this way. It doesn't matter who you support. This is an issue that is larger than partisan politics.

It about how our children are being raised and how we all subtly teach them this behavior. One more , again from Jimmy Kimmel.

From the essay I linked above:

The battle with Men Who Explain Things has trampled down many women–of my generation, of the up-and-coming generation we need so badly, here and in Pakistan and Bolivia and Java, not to speak of the countless women who came before me and were not allowed into the laboratory, or the library, or the conversation, or the revolution, or even the category called human.

Thanks for listening.

and

Raine

Isn't that the home networking thing that plugs into the wall outlet?

I did some digging and it's some type of app that lets you make free calls from a tablet. (or so it seems)

Woah.

Victims of sexual abuse by priests, advocates say, still feel alone. That painful sense of solitude persists even 14 years after the Boston Globe documented a massive cover-up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, setting off a wave of exposés across the country that continue until this day. Even now, some victims think that they were the only one hurt by a particular priest.

The Archdiocese of Baltimore just took a step to address that pain by joining the growing number of dioceses that have posted a list, all in one place, of priests who have been accused in the diocese, some dating back decades. This step is important, advocates say, so that when victims who have suffered in silence type their abusers’ names into Google, they will see that these men have been accused by others as well.

This is really great news and I for on am glad that Sanders has helped to get Clinton to move more to the left on this issue.
A version of this idea was floated way back in Bill Clinton's 1998 State of the Union address where he said that "millions of Americans between the ages of 55 and 65 have lost their health insurance … after a lifetime of work, they are left with nowhere to turn. So I ask the Congress, let these hardworking Americans buy into the Medicare system."

It then kicked around for years as a Democratic Party health care idea before being sidelined in favor of the more ambitious concept of creating a system of universal mandatory subsidized insurance. Early versions of that proposal, including legislation that passed the House of Representatives, features a "public option" on the health care exchanges. An insurance program run by the government, in other words, with payment rates that were tied to Medicare. But centrist Democrats in the United States Senate killed the public option, at which point Medicare buy-in was briefly revived as a possible alternative before it in turn was killed by Joe Lieberman.

Facing pressure on her left flank from Bernie Sanders, Clinton re-endorsed the public option idea and now is re-endorsing the Medicare buy-in as well.

My friend Elyse used one last year to call me from Norway at 11 PM their time, early afternoon here. She was right around the Arctic Circle in the summer, so night only lasted about an hour.

Most other major economic powers have single payer. This is indeed a step in the right direction.

I think candidates do need pressure from the public. Bernie will likely not win the nomination, short of something unexpected happening, but he is helping shape the platform and direction of the Democratic Party.

I guess by now everyone has seen the news story that Zimmerman is going to auction off the gun he used to murder Trayvon Martin. That is about as disgusting as it gets.

This is the thing that concerns me.

I swear to god, I can't believe I am going to say it.

This county needs to take its medicine and vote for whoever our nominee is because Trump is a deadly flu. Or measles, or polio.

Anyone who is supporting him or is trying to justify him are about as bad as worse than anti-vaxxers.

We all hate measles. We hate the Flu. We hate polio. take the shot and vote against diseases that we can prevent.

That felt good, btw.

I'd be more interesteed in whop decides to bid on the gun.

He's gonna have to deal with his own god when the time comes.
