A New Day
Author: BobR    Date: 2024-11-06 13:00:00

I am writing this Tuesday night, since I have a doctor appt this morning at 8:30. As of right now, I have no idea who won the race. We may not know for certain for several days (remember 2020?). I am trying to remain optimistic, but I recall how optimistic we were in 2016. That was a gut-punch I hope we are not going to have to re-live.

I don't know how we got here as a country. The differences couldn't have been more clear. Kamala Harris is a smart, experienced, and compassionate person. The Other Guy is a sunsetting asshole who can barely formulate a sentence. But - he's white and he's male, and he makes other assholes feel emboldened. Apparently that's more important than competent leadership.

The results of this election will make clear to me which states and/or cities I never want to set foot in again. It's disgusting how many of my fellow countrymen (and countrywomen) are willing to overlook his blatant flaws. It's gross, disappointing, and makes me want to live in a more enlightened country.

We've seen the rumblings of Germany in the 1930s occurring at his hate rallies, especially the Nazi rally at MSG. Regardless of the outcome, this cannot stand. We must push back against this festering infection on the nation's soul. If we don't, there's no one who will save us from ourselves.

Fingers crossed...

The last gasp of aging baby boomers. Their fathers fought Nazis; they elected one.

I suppose we could cancel all that "America 250" business over the next two years. Nothing to celebrate now.

Good morning, bloggers!!!!

I have had perhaps six hours or slightly less of sleep. I will see if I go in for tutoring today.

I feel miserable and fear for our future. I think we have to hold fast and take a stand. It will be difficult. Unless the Dems take the House by some miracle, Trump and his allies will have complete power in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

I think we should read the words of Malcolm Nance. A Trump Victory? If So, Break Glass In Case of Emergency

Be sure that the next four years will be a time of turmoil, economic hardship, and possibly civil unrest. Before you can follow instructions on navigating through it, you must first organize. Get your lifeboats back together, tie your fortunes to each other, and move with a purpose in opposition to the storm threatening to scuttle your hopes, dreams, and families.

Today is the day to let go of the mourning and make the American Experiment work again.

There is some good advice at the Daily Kos: "Trump won. Now what?"

I feel disappointed. I made calls to voters in Pennsylvania and Nevada.

Yesterday, I decided to get information about my move. I will move on Saturday, November 23rd, and drive back to Northwest Indiana. (I will use a truck and tow and my dog and cat will be my companions.) I am still trying to get the best deal but AAA.recommends a route through California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, and into Northwest Indiana.

A few friends are trying to get me some interviews. I am hoping for the best but will leave California with some regret even though I enjoyed my time here. Thank you for your support and friendship. I think we will need each other more than ever.

Robert Kutner has some thoughts on the election results in the American Prospect.

A Republic if We Can Keep It

One answer has to do with race and gender. Too many Americans, especially white men, were still not willing to vote for a woman, even less a Black woman. The anticipated wave of white women’s support for Harris did not materialize at levels sufficient to offset the massive male gender gap in Trump’s favor.

Even the issue of reproductive rights, a sheer gift from the Republican right to the Harris campaign, was not decisive. Late-deciding independents swung to Trump, not to Harris. Despite the widely publicized “island of garbage” quote, Harris actually did worse among Hispanic voters than Biden did.
In Trump’s three elections, the one Democrat who was able to beat him, just barely, was a white male named Joe Biden. That speaks volumes.

But there was more to Trump’s win than race and gender. The second answer is that Harris ran a muddled campaign. When voter after uncommitted voter tells interviewers that they don’t know what Harris stands for, something is wrong. Yes, Harris had only three months to make clear who she was and what her presidency would be about. But that is plenty of time for a candidate with a clear strategy and a clear message.

Your thoughts? We need to do some reflection and organize.

A friend in town reports that Boston is quiet today. Not a slow day, but silent and sad.

Boston isn't alone.
